The Conditions of Offering
Charcoal and ink · 700 × 50 mm (each)
The Conditions of Offering continues my exploration of the apple as a symbol of desire, sacrifice and religious expectation. In these drawings, the apple becomes an object that is repeatedly offered, restrained, suspended, pierced, bound, burned or submerged. Each action suggests a different condition through which an offering is made, asking what must be surrendered, controlled or transformed before something can be considered worthy of devotion.
The works extend my ongoing interest in the tension between desire and sacrifice, particularly within the expectations placed upon queer bodies by religious structures. The apple becomes both object and body, carrying traces of vulnerability, violence and endurance. Through repetition and variation, the series considers offering not as a single act, but as a repeated process of giving, withholding and negotiating what remains of the self.
